The picture on this page is a "Cottage Style" window. It has a smaller top sash than the bottom sash.
In Texas we use offset meeting rails a great deal of the time. In most Texas applications it involves a 72" tall window having a 30" tall bottom sash. This is called an ORIOLE type window. The 30" sash is typical even in taller units of 84" or 96".
ORIOLE windows keep the bar out of the line of site when sitting on a sofa or at the dining room table. They are also used to keep the bottom sash under 9.6 square feet of glass in some instances to avoid the necessity of tempering the glass. Tempering is required if the sash is greater than 9.6 Square feet. These rules are called:
